Student and Faculty Profiles

Photo of student Lauren McKeen I love art, I paint watercolors, and I also design purses, mainly because I can’t find what I want, so I make it. My favorite is a clutch that I bought for a dollar, and then covered it with gold material and attached a beaded fringe! I also love horses, but don’t get to spend as much time riding as I’d like. My favorite project at Penn State Fayette so far was a class project designing a logo to represent ourselves - I chose the nickname my mom gave me –WREN -, and drew a picture of the bird on a hard hat from my dad’s workplace. The logo really does represent me as an individual.

Recently I won a contest sponsored by Microsoft and Visa for my original proposal to use stories to combat the stigma about epilepsy.  The proposal inlcuded teaching the public about the conditions of epilepsy and how to respond with understanding and compassion, not fear and rejection.

Photo of student Kye Bane I was born in Brooklyn, and I liked it there, there’s always something to do.  But I also really like it here.  At first it was strange. It wasn’t that hard adjusting to Pa – I was used to seeing people walking around at all times of the day, and here it can be 3:00 in the afternoon and no one is out, but I always find things to do.  I do spend a lot of time on the phone talking to my family.  If I’m not doing school work, I’m playing basketball, or I’m hanging out at a friends house, the mall, or a cool restaurant. And looking forward to hopefully in the future having my own design firm.

People here are so much different than in high school.  There aren’t the cliques and childishness, it’s more mature and more worldly here on campus.

School
I chose elementary education because I want to make the difference in the life of a child. Even if it’s only one child,  I still know my job has been complete. Staying at home has been a good thing, I wanted to come home and see my family every night and tell them about my day, it really reduced the stress of going to college, by having the comforts and convenience of home.

Photo of faculty member Dr. Debra Evans-Rhodes As a child I thought I was going to be a nurse. That changed in high school, when I realized that friends always brought their problems to me and looked to me for advice, which was when I looked to a career in psychology.  My mom would tell you I’ve been a natural teacher since I was born, but as a grad student I originally considered working in industry. I realized later that I wanted to do my own research, not someone else’s. I love teaching students to see the world in different ways, and the flexibility of the schedule is great for my family.
